Royal Philharmonic Orchestra
Conductor - Mark Forkgen
Saturday 20th October, 7.30pm
Mozart: Overture to The Marriage of Figaro
Wagner: Siegfried Idyll
Beethoven: Symphony No.3 Eroica
We are delighted to welcome the world famous Royal Philharmonic Orchestra for our final concert. The orchestra was founded in 1946 by Sir Thomas Beecham as a new first-rate ensemble that would attract the finest players from around the country, and since its foundation has been directed by some of the world's finest conductors, most notably Rudoph Kempe, Antal Doráti, André Previn and Vladimir Ashkenazy.
Mozart based his opera The Marriage of Figaro on a revolutionary play by Beaumarchais, which was at that time banned in Vienna. Wagner composed Siegfried Idyll as a birthday present for his wife after the birth of their son, Siegfried. The material was then adapted to form the love scene between Brünnhilde and Siegfried from the Ring Cycle. The Arts Festival closes with a performance of Beethoven's majestic 3rd Symphony, often cited as the beginning of musical Romanticism. Originally dedicated to Napoleon Bonaparte, the symphony's title page was altered to the Eroica after Napoleon crowned himself Emperor.
